My favorite thing about fall is the fashion followed very closely by fall TV. And if you're like me (I adore scary movies and shows), you don't need a reason or a specific season to get into some spooky entertainment. Although, I will say that curling up on the couch or bed with the lights dimmed and candles lit during a crispy fall night just takes the viewing experience to another level.
Scroll through for some of my picks for what you should watch this spooky season. They range from one emoji, which means it's not so spooky and more-so for the vibes to three emojis, which means you might want to turn on your night light before you go to sleep. Enjoy!
Practical Magic 🧙♀️
Warner Bros./Roadshow Entertainment
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play two hot witch sisters who have avoided magic most of their lives because their townspeople are uncool and there's a curse on their family that prevents them ever finding lasting love. Guess what? They still attempt to (hehe) and it gets messy! They try to resurrect an abuser... Aside from that, the looks they were serving and the nostalgic feeling this movie gives are 10/10.
The Halloweentown movies 🎃
Disney Enterprises, Inc.
"Marnie learns she is a witch on her 13th Halloween and is transported to Halloweentown—a magical place where ghosts, ghouls, witches, and werewolves live apart from the human world, but she soon finds herself battling wicked warlocks, evil curses, and endless surprises." (Wikipedia)
More witches. Seeing a theme? These movies just take me back to when I was a child and they would play on Disney Channel. Throwback to when they had Sara Paxton playing Marnie in the fourth movie and we were all very much confused.
Hocus Pocus 🧹
Disney/Kobal/Shutterstock
"After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani and their new friend, Allison. After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches' book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.
And yet another witchy family. Annoying how overhyped this is but it is a solid movie. "A virgin lit the candle." (Fun fact: I think Disney used to cut that part out but ABC Family/Freeform left it in)
The Addams Family & Addams Family Values 🔪
Paramount
Both are equally fantastic. The Addams are morbid and endearing. Plus, Gomez and Morticia are actual couple goals. "Cara Mia!"
Bob's Burgers 🍔
Fox
The series has a Halloween episode every season and they usually don't disappoint. The picture above is from "The Hauntening" (Season 6 ep. 3). Louise claims she's never been scared so her family designs a haunted house to change that. This is easily one of my favorite episodes.
Coraline 🪡
Laika Studios/Focus Features
"While exploring her new home, a girl named Coraline discovers a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own but, in many ways, is better. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother and the rest of her parallel family try to keep her there forever. Coraline must use all her resources and bravery to make it back to her own family and life." (Google)
Midnight Mass 💀 👻
Netflix
"A young man returns to his isolated hometown on Crockett Island, hoping to rebuild his life after serving four years in prison for killing someone in a drunk-driving incident. He arrives at the same time as a mysterious, charismatic young priest who begins to revitalise the town's flagging faith. However, the community's divisions are soon exacerbated by the priest's deeds while mysterious events befall the small town." (Wikipedia)
The angel is terrifying to look at and might haunt your dreams a little, but it's a good story line and overall not too frightening.
Bates Motel 🏨 🔪
A&E
"After the death of her husband, Norma Bates buys a motel in the picturesque coastal town of White Pine Bay, giving herself and teenage son Norman a chance to begin anew. Shy Norman is reluctant at first, but with the help of his mother -- with whom he shares an intensely close relationship -- the boy begins to open up to others and make new friends. Some locals, however, aren't as friendly and welcoming to the Bates, who discover that because White Pine Bay isn't as peaceful as it appears, they are forced to do whatever it takes to survive." (Google)
Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore deserve all the awards. This series was chilling and unhinged from start to finish. The story lines, the acting, and Rihanna as Marion!!
The Haunting of Hill House 🎃 👻 🔪
Netflix
"This modern reimagining of the Shirley Jackson novel follows siblings who, as children, grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country. Now adults, they are forced back together in the face of tragedy and must finally confront the ghosts of their past. Some of those ghosts still lurk in their minds, while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House." (Google)
This is one of my favorite series of all time. I never scream but there were at least two or three jump scares that got me. This is also so much more than a scary show. It deals with some heavy and traumatic topics, so just be mindful.
Marianne 🧙♀️ 💀 😈
Netflix
"A famous horror writer who is lured back to her hometown discovers that the evil spirit who plagues her dreams is now wreaking havoc in the real world."
I don't know why no one talks about this or why Netflix canceled it after one season but this show was really good. Genuinely had some terrifying scenes. Mireille Herbstmeyer, who plays Mrs. Daugeron (pictured above) needs more recognition. This is in French and it does start to look a little too fake and animated towards the end but don't let that dissuade you. Overall, very solid show.
Insidious 1 & 2 😴 👿🚪
Everett Collection Inc/Alamo Stock Photo
"The story centers on a married couple whose boy inexplicably enters a comatose state and becomes a vessel for a variety of demonic entities in an astral plane." (Wikipedia)
The astral projection, the Further, all the spirits trying to take over Dalton's body.
The Conjuring 1 & 2 👻 👿 👹
New Line Cinema
Another James Wan franchise. These movies center around Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were real paranormal investigators and authors working on prominent cases that draw inspiration from real-life hauntings.
The first is at the top of my list for favorite scary movies.
As Above So Below ⛑️☠️🪦
Universal
"Archaeologist Scarlett Marlowe has devoted her whole life to finding one of history's greatest treasures: Flamel's Philosopher's Stone. According to legend, the artifact can grant eternal life and turn any metal into gold. When she learns that the stone is hidden underground in the Catacombs of Paris, she assembles a crew to guide and document her historic mission. As they begin their descent, the team-members have no way of knowing that they are entering their own personal hell."
This is loosely based on Dante's Inferno. I feel like I also don't hear enough people talk about this one. Really good movie with some unexpected scary moments. Also another one that goes deeper than just trying to scare you.
Leave me a comment or shoot me a message if I hit or missed any of your favorite spooky season shows or movies.
